The 2021 Business Olympics: "Hometown Makeover"
We were very excited to be able to continue our Business Olympics tradition in November of 2021. It was amazing to see what the students accomplished! The time and dedication that all the students put into their presentations was so impressive and we are so proud of them all. This was our 27th consecutive year doing this competition. The students’ presentations have evolved over the years demonstrating a definite growth in their knowledge of business skills, technology, teamwork and creativity.
The topic for this year’s competition was “Hometown Heroes.” The team’s challenge was to
pick a vacant lot/building in either St. James, Nesconset or Smithtown and create a marketing plan for a new business. There were 200+ students on over 50 teams involved in this year's competition.
The first round presentations were submitted by the students and our School of Business
faculty members worked to split them into 8 different virtual rooms, to be reviewed virtually
by a panel of judges from our Industry Advisory Board. The eight teams with the highest
points from each virtual room advanced to the final round. Each finalist team presented their project live & in person to a panel of judges in the auditorium at High School West. The judges scored each team and the ranked them in 1st – 8th places.
Prizes were awarded to all members of each of the Top 8 teams. In addition there was an
Honorable Mention team from each virtual room who were awarded Duck Donuts Gift Cards. This year, we added a “Student’s Choice” award and all students in the audience got to vote on their Top 3 favorites. This team was awarded a prize for taking home this honor…..this added a fun element to the event!
As usual we couldn’t have done this event without the support of the Smithtown IAB. We
were thrilled to have almost 100 Judges from the community participate and were happy that approximately 35 of them were able to join us for the In-Person Final event on November 17, 2021. A huge Thank You goes out to the Smithtown Chic-Fillet for proving a wonderful chicken dinner for all of our Judges, teachers and administrators prior to the evening’s event. And to Duck Donuts for sponsoring the yummy donuts as dessert for the evening for ALL PARTICIPANTS and JUDGES. And last but not least, a big round of applause for all who supported this event by sponsoring our team prizes. The students were awarded monetary prized from the generous donations that we received.
Needless to say, the event was a huge success and we look forward to continuing our tradition of Business Olympics and doing it again in November of 2022. See you there!
